In the 2023 Best Countries rankings by U.S. News, Russia has regained its reputation as the most corrupt country, according to the survey.
Which nations are commonly regarded as having high levels of corruption?
The issue of corruption continues to persist globally, as noted by former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index indicates that most countries still struggle to combat corruption, defining it as the misuse of entrusted power for personal gain.
In the 2023 Best Countries rankings by U.S. News, Russia has been perceived as the world’s most corrupt nation. This ranking is based on a survey involving over 17,000 respondents from around the world who assessed 87 countries using 73 different attributes. Respondents were asked whether they associated the term “corrupt” with various countries, forming the basis for the open for business subranking, as well as influencing rankings related to investment, corporate headquarters, and transparency.
Remarkably, this is the second consecutive year that Russia has topped the list as the world’s most corrupt country. Conversely, the United States dropped two spots to No. 25 among the countries perceived as least corrupt, down from its No. 23 ranking the previous year.
