Bindeshwar Pathak, the founder of Sulabh International and a social activist who pioneered the construction of public restrooms, passed away on Tuesday at AIIMS Delhi after suffering a cardiac arrest, according to a close associate.
The 80-year-old was the founder of Sulabh International, an organisation that provides humanitarian services in India and advocates for the advancement of human rights, environmental cleanliness, waste management, and educational reforms.
On Independence Day, Pathak hoisted the flag in the morning, according to his aide, but soon after, he passed out. To AIIMS Delhi, he was rushed. According to a hospital source, Pathak was declared dead at 1:42 pm. He claimed that cardiac arrest was the cause of death.
In a tweet, the prime minister extended his condolences and deep sorrow.
“The passing away of Dr Bindeshwar Pathak Ji is a profound loss for our nation. He was a visionary who worked extensively for societal progress and empowering the downtrodden. Bindeshwar Ji made it his mission to build a cleaner India. He provided monumental support to the Swachh Bharat Mission. During our various conversations, his passion towards Swachhata was always visible…,” the PM tweeted.
