India secured a thrilling two-wicket victory over Australia in the opening T20 International in Visakhapatnam on Thursday, registering their highest successful chase in the format. Chasing a daunting target of 209, India rode on captain Suryakumar Yadav’s belligerent 80 off 42 balls and Rinku Singh’s composed 22 not out off 14 balls to cross the finish line with a ball to spare.
Opting to bowl first, India’s young bowling attack was put to the sword by Josh Inglis, who hammered a scintillating 110 off 50 balls, powering Australia to a commanding 208 for three. Inglis’s knock was punctuated by eight sixes, half of which came off Ravi Bishnoi’s googly bowling. Steve Smith provided valuable support with an unbeaten 52 off 41 balls.
In reply, India’s chase was kickstarted by Ishan Kishan’s quickfire 39-ball 58, which included five sixes. Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav put together a crucial 112-run stand in 10 overs, keeping India in the hunt.
After Suryakumar’s departure, Axar Patel’s run-a-ball 2 and a series of unfortunate run-outs put India in a spot of bother. However, Rinku Singh held his nerve, guiding India home with some lusty blows towards the end.
Rinku’s composure and execution under pressure, coupled with Suryakumar’s captain’s knock, proved to be the difference for India in this high-scoring thriller.
